You’re Engaged!! Now What?

You’re Engaged!! Now What?

This is the moment you’ve been looking forward to. You’ve got an engagement ring, and you’re getting married! As a new fiancé, you might be wondering, "I just got engaged; now what?" Wedding planning is a time-consuming process that does not have to begin the moment you say “yes” to your partner.

There are so many things to consider, so many people to contact, and so much to accomplish. We’re here to help before you let yourself become overwhelmed.

You have plenty of time to plan the rest of your lives, but if you’re like most newly engaged people, you'll be eager to share the news with all your friends, celebrate your engagement, and dive headfirst into wedding planning. So where do you get started?

There are no set guidelines to follow as long as you tackle the immediate to-dos. Committing the rest of your life to the love of your life is both scary and exciting,  but it's a major milestone, and planning a wedding together is the best kind of stress. Here are the first things you and your partner can look to do after your engagement.

Five Tips for What to Do After Getting Engaged

1. Share the News with Family and Friends

The first step after you're engaged is to tell everyone. You can take as much or as little time as you want to make the big announcement. Some couples want to tell everyone as soon as possible, while others may prefer to keep the happy news private first.

When you're ready to share, there are a few people you should notify before posting on social media. This includes your family and immediate family first, followed by extended family and friends. Once the VIPs have been informed, you can make your "just engaged" post public, accompanied by a cute Instagram caption.

2. Celebrate Your Engagement

After you've announced your engagement, take a moment to enjoy the experience with your fiancé. You don't have to start planning right away if you're newly engaged. We recommend that couples take some time to relax before starting the planning process.

Host an engagement party for your closest friends and family, or go on an engagement honeymoon to enjoy one-on-one time. You don't have to have an engagement party, but if you do, there are a few things to consider.

Do you want to plan it yourself or give the responsibility to parents or friends? Do you want to keep it low-key and have it at your house or in the backyard? Would you rather everyone gather for drinks at your favorite bar or rent a space for a catered dinner? In either case, do what feels right to you and your partner.

3. Get Organized

When you're ready to begin planning, the first thing you should do is organize your wedding information. To keep everything in one place, from your registry to your wedding website and vendor list, we recommend downloading a wedding planner app.

Wedding planner apps like Wedding Planner by The Knot, Zola, and Joy are designed to help guide you through the planning process. You can get personalized wedding inspiration, choose a date and location, book vendors and manage aspects of your planning, such as your budget breakdown and RSVP status.

4. Start a Wedding Checklist

Once you select a wedding date, start a list of tasks to guide planning. You can create a personalized wedding checklist on your wedding planning app to figure out what your to-dos are on a month-by-month basis.

It may seem overwhelming to get as much done as possible in the first few months, but having a checklist with essential tasks will save you potential headaches and obstacles in the weeks leading up to your big day.

5. Set Aside Time to Plan

The wedding planning process can be as stressful as it is exciting. We recommend setting aside time with your partner to plan together. Don't let wedding planning take over your date nights, it's important to spend time together that isn't about the wedding. If you set aside time to focus solely on planning, you'll accomplish more together.

The most important aspects of the wedding should be joint decisions that accommodate both of your needs and desires. You'll want to settle on details together like budget, guest list, venue, and overall vibes. From there, have an honest conversation about what details matter most to each of you.
